Traditional unani Migraine formula
Nowadays, migraine (Shaqiqa) has become one of the most common health concerns affecting people of all ages. Long working hours, excessive screen time, stress, irregular sleep, unhealthy eating habits, dehydration, and environmental factors have contributed to the increasing number of people suffering from recurring headaches and one-sided migraine attacks. These episodes can interfere with daily activities, reduce productivity, and significantly affect a person’s quality of life.

Long before modern medicine, Unani physicians recognized this condition as Shaqiqa, a disorder characterized by pain affecting one side of the head. Classical Unani texts describe various herbal formulations that were traditionally used to help relieve headache, strengthen the nervous system, and restore the body’s natural balance according to Unani principles.
In this article, we share a traditional Unani formula for Shaqiqa (migraine) as described in classical Unani literature. Traditional Unani Formula for Migraine
Ingredients
- Paust Halela Kabuli – 1 Tola
- Ustu kuddus – 1 1/2 Tola
- Badiyan (Fennel) – 6 Masha
- Kishneez Khush (Dried Coriander Seeds) – 9 Masha
- Mirch Siyah (Black Pepper) – 2 Masha
- Dana Elaichi Kalan (Black Cardamom Seeds) – 6 Masha
- Potassium Bromide – 6 Masha
- Aspirin – 3 Masha
Note: 1 mash equal to ~.97 grams, 1 Taula ~ 11.66 grams
Preparation Method
Clean and dry all the herbal ingredients thoroughly. Grind Paust Halela Kabuli, Ustukhuddus, Badiyan, Kishneez Khush, Mirch Siyah, and Dana Elaichi Kalan into a fine powder and sieve the mixture to obtain a uniform consistency. Finally, add the measured Potassium Bromide and Aspirin, and mix thoroughly until all ingredients are evenly blended. Store the finished powder in a clean, dry, airtight glass container
Traditional usage
Take 3 Masha (approximately 3 grams) of the prepared powder with lukewarm water at bedtime, and another 3 Masha early in the morning before sunrise, or as traditionally advised by a qualified Unani physician
